Due to its height of about 1,216 metres and its isolation other mountains, Gunung Jerai has a biologically diverse stem containing a diversity of Malaysian forest vegetation. These include lowland, hill and upper dipterocarp forest to lower and upper montane forest.
A rare feature of the itain is the abrupt transition from hill dipterocarp forest to nique flora types of the montane forest. The mountain is water catchment for irrigating the lowland rice plains that h out from its northern foothills to the distant horizon. Meandering through the forested hills of the reserve are ng trails that display a diverse range of vegetation like ferns, orchids and rhododendrons. Fauna observed includes edeer, long tailed macaques, dusky leaf monkeys, squirrels, loris and many bird species.

GETTING THERE
About 60 km north west of Penang in south west Kedah. About 35 km from Sungai Petani and Alor Setar. About 430 km from Kuala Lumpur via the North/South Expressway. Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum at Merbok is about 17 km from Sungai Petani.
