Birdwatching Tour in Penang

Birdwatching Tour in Penang

Penang as a popular tourist destination, is not only about local food and fine cuisines but it is also home to fascinating world that is relatively unknown. The alluring and amazing bird life around the state of Penang. The narrow straits of Air Hitam Dalam Educational Forest is a small patch of freshwater swamp forest at the northern end of the state and it provides sanctuary to such feathered jewels as the Mangrove Pitta, Ruddy Kingfisher and Black-And-Red Broadbill. A number of migrants also pass through the locality and some will also remain here for the winter. It is also for the best places to see nocturnal species like owls and nightjars. Not too far from here lies the coastline of Teluk Air Tawar – Kuala Muda which has been gazetted as an Important Bird Area. Each year, thousands of waders and other shore birds will find refuge here during the winter months up north and this is certainly one of the best wader sites in Malaysia.

Bujanga Valley of the Dragons

Bujanga Valley of the Dragons

As our boat meanders up the rivers surrounded on both sides of the river by dense mangrove swamps we may have opportunities to observe Monitor Lizards, Little Herons, Brahminy Kites, Sea Eagles and Kingfishers. Sungai Batu is sited at the base of Mount Jerai, once rich in magnetite, haematite and geotite. Ancient Indian (Tamil) records from the Cangkam Period (200BCE to 200CE) specifically refer to iron imported from this area (then known as Kataram). We will visit several archaeological sites including its modest Archaeology Museum to observe artifacts retrieved from the digs. To date, 97 sites have been identified including a sunken ship, not far from this riverside jetty. They show the existence of a Hindu/Buddhist civilization that used the valley as a trading centre from the 1st to 14th century. Join us on a fascinating journey to ‘Bujanga’ and let us together unravel the historical puzzle of a lost civilisation, considered as South East Asia’s most important discovery in several decades,  almost a thousand years older than Angkor Wat and Borobudur.

Sedim Rainforest Canopy

Sedim Rainforest Canopy

After some light refreshments we begin wildlife watching. We then ascend the canopy walkway, walking 30 meters up amongst the birds and other wildlife. At 925 meters long it is the longest canopy walkway in the world. This will certainly be the highlight of our tour were we will get a chance to observe the most productive part of the rainforest. It is here in the rainforest canopy where most plant life and subsequently most insect life and animal life can be found. Your naturalist will unfold its many secrets to you. The heat and humidity builds rapidly in a tropical rainforest so we will make full use of the cool of the morning hours. We next go on an easy stroll along a paved pathway that takes us through an open corridor rich with plant life and medicinal herbs and along the way observe the rich bird life that abounds here. The trail loops and ends at a jungle stream where it is time for an invigorating dip into the cool clear waters of the Sedim River or if you may prefer just resting in a hammock under the shade of a rainforest tree in quiet contemplation, listening to the sounds of the rustling river before us and letting our senses wander through the sights, sounds and fragrant scents of the rainforest that abound us. For the more energetic among us there is the optional white water rafting to try out, most surely guaranteed to give you a big adrenaline rush. These activities should build up your appetite for a typical Malay picnic lunch with dessert. After lunch we will begin our return trip to your hotel. You should be back at your hotel by early evening. We will be confident that you will have had a most enlighten and eventful day that will not be soon forgotten.
