Photography Competition

Langkawi invites you to enter your stunning wildlife photos toLangkawi Birdrace and Fotofest photography competition. We’re looking for beautiful bird photographs representing the wildlife of our magical islands. Your own original digital images of our wildlife are all eligible for the competition. Cash rewards will be offered to the winning photographs. The contest is open to all participants either Malaysian or foreigners.

The winning images along with photo credits will be printed in the 2012 ‘Wildlife of Langkawi’ calendar and made available for sale to all visitors to the islands. The profit from this calender sales will be put into a conservation project chosen by the organizers.

Rules and Regulations

Ethics:

The first priority of the contest is conservation of birdlife and its critical habitat. Contestants must minimize disturbance of birdlife and habitat. Birds and wildlife cannot be trapped or restrained. Judges will be asked to severely reduce the score or disqualify photographs of animals that appear to be stressed. Welfare of the subject is the foremost consideration.

  1. This contest is open to all Malaysian and International Participants
  2. Photographs must be a wild Langkawi species
  3. Photographs of bird and wildlife nesting or in the nests will be disqualified
  4. NO photographs of tame or caged birds and wildlife allowed.
  5. Flash Photography is NOT allowed to Bird and Mammals category. Acceptable to macro and reptile category as welfare of the subject is consider.
  6. Bird and wildlife Photos must be taken in Langkawi during the duration of the competition.
  7. The photographs, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material taken by the Contest
    entrant.
  8. Each participant may submit a maximum of 2 entries and must be captioned.
  9. Registration fee RM150.00 per person payable on the 25th November 2011 at the event venue.
  10. The registration fee includes prize giving gala dinner and Photography Workshops at The Andaman Luxury Collection Langkawi
  11. EXIF information for the image must be intact to prove the date taken.
  12. Images must be submitted with no borders and also no watermarks. All submitted images must be minimum 1024 pixel on the long side.
  13. All entries must be original (must show original RAW or JPG image file). Optimization of images or color correction, color contrast, brightness is acceptable, as is cropping.
  14. The entries are non-returnable. Participants retain the copyright of the photographs submitted. The Organizer and its sponsors and affiliate retain the right to use or reproduce the photos for promotional purposes of future Langkawi Birding and Fotofest and Photo Credits will be acknowledged.
  15. The organizers will not be held responsible for any loss or damage to an entry.
  16. Any cost incurred in order to get the photograph will be bear by participant.
  17. Participants will be given Event Stickers to be display on their cars for identifications.
  18. Deadline of Submission of Entries will be at 12.00 pm on the 27th November 2011
  19. JUDGINGContest consists of one (1) round of evaluation. A panel of Wildlife Photographers and Bird experts will evaluate all eligible entries based on the following Judging Criteria: (1) Interesting Behavior (2) Photographic quality (Sharpness, colors, exposure, etc) Decisions of the Judges are final and binding. Winners will be notified at the prize giving ceremony.
  20. WINNING PHOTOS will be printed in 12RW Photo Print and Exhibited by the organizer, followed by the Prize giving ceremony to be held on the 27th November 2011at 2000hrs pm at dinner & prize giving venue.

ETHICS

The first priority of the contest is conservation of wildlife and its critical habitat. Contestants must minimize disturbance of wildlife and habitat. Wildlife cannot be trapped or restrained. Welfare of the subject is the foremost consideration.

CRITERIA

Any films made between 25th to 27th November are eligible for entry. Films can be of any discipline, genre, under 10 mins in length, and format. It should be a documentary on subjects relevant to Langkawi.

ENTRY CONDITIONS

Entry is free of cost. Entries without the duly filled-in entry form will not be considered. All entries must be accompanied by a CD containing the soft copies of labeled still photographs/slides from the films for use in the promotion of the Fest. The cost for the film must be covered by the entrants themselves. The festival will not be responsible for any loss, damage, and/or delay of films in transit.

SENDING PROCEDURES

Entries for selection will be accepted only in DVD or VCD formats, and they have to be sent by hand.

FILM SELECTION

All entries will be viewed by a select judge/judges after 12.00 pm on the 27th of November. 011. The directors and/or producers of the winning entry will be notified at the prize giving dinner on the evening of the 27th of November held at The Andaman a Luxury Collection Resort. The festival does not send out rejection letters.

FORMAT FOR FINAL SUBMISSION

Video: mini DV or DV Cam.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR FINAL SELECTED ENTRIES

The professional video format for screening should reach the organizers,Langkawi Birding & Fotofest by 12.00pm on the 27th November 2011 at the prearranged location.

PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL

The festival may use up to 10 percent of the entry’s running time for promotional purposes.

JURY AND AWARDS

Cash prize along with citations, will be awarded for overall excellence to the directors of the best films chosen by an elected jury.

RETURNING OF ENTRIES

Entering films for Langkawi Birding & Fotofest 2011 indicates that the entry copies will be part of the LBFf Archive maintained by Junglewalla. These copies will be maintained as a record and for reference. The films kept in the Archive will not be distributed or screened commercially.
In case of any controversy on a matter not mentioned in the above regulations, the Festival Director, in consultation with the Festival Organizing Committee, will decide on appropriate action. The Director’s word shall be final.

Workshop Day

Workshop Day

Day one of the event kicked off with workshops and talks by invited judges and nature conservationists consisted of topics ranging from photography skills, macro (insect) photography, video-scoping (combining still photography with video) and short documentary workshop.  To the excitement of many, the work­shops on day one were both innovative and creative with a mixture of comedy in between. The speakers for the work­shop were Malaysia’s very first digital ‘videoscoper’ Tee Lian Huat, master macrophotographer Kurt Orion and also Basil R. Gelpke which is a filmmaker. He has won a series of awards for his documentary filmmaking such as the 2007 Sol d’Or of Barcelona, the Film Prize 2006 by the City of Zurich, the 2007 Best Doc Award of the Palm Beach Film Festival, and the 2006 Best of Fest Award at Lake Tahoe Film

From the workshop, participants were given new tips on photography and how to approach subjects and produce great photographs and filming tips and tricks. At the end of 1st day workshop about 10 packed vehicle rush to the foothill of Gunung Raya to greet the Great Hornbill of Langkawi. We manage to spot at least 50 of them.  It’s a great experience to some of the participant who never spots this bird before.  Overall the day 1 ended with loud sound of cicada and magnificent act from a pair of Great Hornbill.

Flag Off Day

The participants of the bird race and photography component were flagged off from the entrance of cable car on the second day of the event. Officiating the flag off ceremony was Encik Azmil Munif Bukhari, the deputy Tourism Manager of LADA which saw around 50 participants present.  Panorama Langkawi provide full access to all participant and sponsors free VIP pass to ride the cable car at any time throughout the race period. These bring more excitement to all participants to also get a breathtaking view of Langkawi from high above.

At 10.30am Panorama Langkawi organizes a simple event launching their Green Campaign which gets a good coverage from media. The 2nd day highlight are at 7pm where all participant and media are invited to The Andaman A Luxury Collection Resort Langkawi for Colugo ( Flying lemur ) spotting.

KURT (AKA ORION MYSTERY) – MAESTRO OF MACRO

Considered a” Maestro of Macro”, Kurt’s work have graced the cover of Photographer’s Magazine, Ukrainian edition; 3 times photo of the week on Juza international Forum; Images used on LRT, Rapid Buses and Monorail in Tourism Malaysia’s Zoom series (ladybird, yellow assassin bug, giraffe weevil). “Weevil taking off” image shortlisted for the Photographer of the Year (POTY).

Come listen and learn from the maestro himself. An opportunity not to be missed. Besides authoring a popular macro photography blog: Up Close With Nature, Kurt also conducts photography workshops regularly, with special focus on macro.

Basil Gelpke

Basil Gelpke

Basil Gelpke was born September 10, 1962 in Basel, Switzerland. After his studies in Social Anthropology, Economics and in the production of scientific films Basil soon became fascinated by all kinds of moving images. He is Managing Director of his production house Lava Production AG, www.lavatv.com

He started his career in advertising but soon changed profession to become one of the youngest journalists to ever work for national Swiss Television. Among his first assignments was a highly acclaimed interview with Lisa Minelli.

1990 he moved to Cologne to become the producer of Tacheles, a weekly political talkshow on German television. There he worked closely with host Johannes Gross, a legendary figure in German journalism. Whilst in Cologne he also compiled his first one hour documentary “The Artificial Paradise” on behalf of Germany’s WDR channel. This film, about the history of LSD and its Swiss inventor, Albert Hofmann later got nominated for Germany’s prestigious Grimme awards.

Basil has won a series of awards for his documentary filmmaking such as the 2007 Sol d’Or of Barcelona, the Film Prize 2006 by the City of Zurich, the 2007 Best Doc Award of the Palm Beach Film Festival, and the 2006 Best of Fest Award at Lake Tahoe Film.

Festival amongst others His documentary “A Crude Awakening–The Oil Crash” was the only film shortlisted twice with the 2007 Grierson Awards – Britain’s foremost Documentary Awards and got invited to more than 50 film festivals. In the US it was bought by Robert Redford to launch his “Green” programming strand on Sundance Channel and got sold to over 20 territories.

TEE LIAN HUAT – PIONEER OF DIGITAL VIDEOSCOPING

Considered a pioneer of “Digital Videoscoping”. A trained accountant with a passion for birds, he has been photographing birds as a “digiscoper” for over 15 years with the last 3 years as a “Digi-videoscoper”. Today Mr. Tee is a leader of this very new and innovative method capturing wildlife/birdlife in action. His days are spent in the rainforest nearby Kuala Lumpur sharpening his skills and techniques in the art of “digi-videoscoping”.

He has traveled to Myanmar, Thailand, Australia and Borneo in pursuit of his passion- birds.

His years of experience has resulted in the capture of hi definition digital footage of some very rare birds. Needless to say his video images are highly sort after especially in the tourism sector. Join us as Mr. Tee Lian Huat shares his passion, experiences and techniques with us. Come and view some of his amazing video images of birds in their full glory

Rainforest Awakening

As morning light breaks the forest awaken to the sights and sounds of birds, monkeys, squirrels and a myriad of other delightful animals. Morning is the best time to explore a rainforest to gain an insight into the plant life and animal life that abounds here.

Rainforest Afterdark

Let our naturalist unravel some of the unique sounds and secretive animals that usually appear as night falls. Watch out for Flying Foxes, Flying Squirrels and the very unique Flying Lemurs.

Hornbills of Gunung Raya

Gunung Raya is the highest peak on Langkawi and also home to the Great Hornbills.This is probably the easiest place in Malaysia to observe these carismatic bird esspecially since the drive up to the peak brings us along the canopy of the rainforest.
